Do you know Awaji Ningyo Joruri which is a nationally designated intangible folk cultural property developed 500 years ago? It is a Japanese traditional puppet theater accompanied by a form of traditional Japanese music called Joruri. One puppet is manipulated by 3 puppeteers that require incredibly high skill and teamwork. They usually show their performance at their base in the southern end of Awaji Island. In this special tour, they make a trip only for you at the Syunyouso Historic country retreat. The detailed and elegant traditional Japanese wooden architecture was originally owned by a wealthy man who succeeded in shipbuilding in 1941. Because the excellent works of the building and exquisitely are well preserved, it was registered as a national tangible property. This time, their traditional yet fun performance is appreciated at the guest room of Syunyouso. Enjoy interacting with the puppet and fun puppeteers. Let’s get a commemorative photo of you and them.

The special theater, designed by architect Shuhei Endo, utilizes curved lines to look like the “Kashira” part of a doll's head when viewed from above.
After the performance, a member of the troupe guides you, as a back stage tour, the trio of Puppet Joruri : the 3-person operation of a puppet, emoting as you speak some Joruri lines, and playing the Shamisen, Japanese musical instrument. Please be sure to take photos of each experience!
You can invite performers to your private space, such as your hotel and an elegant traditional Japanese architecture, in order to enjoy the private Puppet Theater.
