Maruyama Okyo is a representative painter of Japan who was active in the Edo period. For a long time, the wonderful fusuma paintings of national treasure class painted by him and his family have been quietly left behind in this Tajima region. This temple stands out from other temples, and it is like an art museum, and you will definitely be overwhelmed by the single work and spatial art created by integrating the inside of the temple and the garden. This is because Maruyama Okyo's work is also in the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and is very appreciated. Having one item is rare, but there are 165 art items - you could say it's a mecca for Maruyama Okyo.

Highlights

  • The works at Daijoji have been said to be Okyo's gift to repay the kindness of chief priest who assisted the young artist in times of need.
  • Okyo has been called the father of the sketch and has contributed greatly to the modernization of Japanese painting.
  • The reason for such high acclaim lies in his distinctive approach to the pictorial surface, which transformed the mere surface painting do forms to a deeper examination and understanding of the basic structures of objects.
